How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test since there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c, click here even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know both the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
